The Salkantay Trek is known for its diverse and spectacular landscapes, including snowy mountains, lagoons, and tropical jungle. It typically lasts 5 days and covers approximately 74 km (46 miles). Unlike the Inca Trail, it does not require permits to be obtained well in advance and is less regulated, offering more flexibility. It reaches higher altitudes, with the highest point being the Salkantay Pass at 4,650 meters (15,200 feet) above sea level.
The Inca Trail is famous for its ancient Inca ruins, stone-paved paths, and tunnels. It is a route rich in history, following the same path used by the Incas centuries ago. It typically lasts 4 days and covers approximately 42 km (26 miles). It offers spectacular views of the jungle and the Andes, but focuses more on the archaeological ruins along the way.
