ITINERARY

Day 1DAY 1: CUSCO – CHALLACANCHA – HUMANTAY – SORAYPAMPA (06 hours trekking)

Our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 am. We will travel in a comfortable transport to Mollepata (approx. 3 hours), where we will have a nutritious breakfast. Then we will drive another hour to Challacancha (3,380 meters/ 11,090 feet), the starting point of our hike, passing through the valley that is divided in two (Valle de Mollepata and Challacancha). The trailhead will take us through some beautiful views. After a 3-hour hike, we arrive at our first campsite at Soraypampa (3,900 metres/12,800 feet) at approximately 1:00 p.m. We will have time to relax and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our chef.

Later, after our lunch we will visit the famous Humantay Lagoon! After 1 hour and 30 minutes of walking, we will arrive at the lagoon (4,220 meters / 13,850 feet) with an incredible view where the lagoon can be seen blue-green and the snow-capped peak of the Humantay mountain behind, making it one of the most impressive mountains of the Andes. We will take some time to admire the impressive views and then we will descend to our camp in Soraypampa. Arriving at approximately 6:00 pm, we will have tea and dinner, and spend the night in our beautiful glass cabins.

Walking distance: 12 km/7.4 miles

Day 2DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PASS – CUSCO (7 hours of trekking)

We will get up very early to start the trek to the Salkantay Pass. We will cross the landscape formed between the mountains and we will gain altitude as we go, so we will have another perspective of the mountains around us, as well as seeing the place where we slept the night before, weather permitting.

We will follow the path until we reach the pass, at 4.600 meters altitude, the highest part of the trekking.

If the cloud conditions are optimal, we will be able to see the snowy Salkantay and the Humanity mountain up close, while we take a break from the climb. After seeing this true spectacle of nature, we will  return by the same path to our base camp to collect our things and take the vehicle from this place to Cusco, where the activity ends.

How can I prepare for the hike and prevent altitude sickness?

The best way to prepare yourself for this trekking experiencee is easy: spend at least 2 to 3 days at a high-altitude place like Cusco, so your body gets used to the high altitude. If you have already been to a high altitude destination before arriving to Cusco, we still recommend you spend at least one full day in Cusco to rest, recuperate from your trip, and enjoy the beautiful views of the city before your trek.
