THE FLOATING ISLANDS OF THE UROS
The tour begins with hotel pickup in Puno at approximately 7:15 am, followed by a transfer to the main port of Puno. Our speedboat awaits us here, where we start our journey across Lake Titicaca. During the ride, your guide will share detailed information about the highest navigable lake in the world. Our first stop will be at the floating islands of the Uros, located at an altitude of 3812 meters (12,506 feet). Here, we will visit a local Uros family who will immerse us in their way of life, including their fishing techniques for carachi and pejerrey. They will also teach us about the traditional uses of the totora plant. Currently, the Uros community has around 100 floating islands. Optionally, at an additional cost, you can take a ride in the traditional Totora reed boats. After this unique experience on the Uros islands, we will head to Taquile Island.
TAQUILE ISLAND
We will sail from the Uros islands for approximately 1 hour until we reach Taquile Island, which rises to an altitude of 3905 meters (12,959 feet) above sea level. Upon arrival, we will embark on a leisurely walk along its stone paths, passing through beautiful stone archways and enjoying landscapes such as its agricultural terraces. We will arrive at a central location where our guide will introduce us to local families from Taquile. We will enjoy their music, traditions, and delve into their renowned textile craftsmanship, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2006.
Additionally, a native family from Taquile will prepare lunch for us using local ingredients. Afterwards, we will have enough time to rest, shop for handicrafts, and marvel at the beautiful scenery.
Finally, we will take a last walk downhill from the island to our speedboat and embark on our return journey across the incredible Lake Titicaca to the main port, arriving around 4:00 pm.
