El 2 Days Humantay Lake and Salkantay Trek is a great way to explore the highlights of the Andes Mountains in a short amount of time. The Humantay Lake is one of the many hidden gems of Peru’s highland region and well known for its insanely bright blue and green water and its snow-capped mountain backdrop.
Our Andean mountain adventure begins at 4:30am. We will pick you up at your hotel and drive in our van to Mollepata. Along the way, we pass through two picturesque local communities called Iscuchaca and Limatambo. At around 8:00am, we will stop in Mollepata to have a nutricious breakfast and then take our transportation for one more hour to Challacancha (3,380 meters/ 11,090 feet), the starting point of our hike, passing the view point of Hornada Pata where the valley splits into two. The beginning of the trail will take us through some beautiful valleys. After a three hour hike, we arrive at our campsite in Soraypampa (3,900 meters /12,800 feet) at approximately 13:30 pm. We will have time to relax and enjoy a delicious lunch.
Later, we will finally visit the famous Humantay Lagoon! After 1.5 hours of hiking, we will arrive at the lagoon (4,220 meters/13,850 feet) with blue-green water and beautiful views of Humantay Mountain and Lake Humantay, making it one of the most impressive places in the Andes Mountains. We will take some time to admire the beautiful views of this special place. Later, we head back to our campsite in Soraypampa for approximately 2 hours. We will have a hot cup of tea, a delicious dinner prepared by our cook, and stay overnight in our comfortable glass cabins at the campite.
Hiking Distance: 8 km/5 miles
Very early in the morning we will have a delicious breakfast and get ready to take a moderate climb on your second day of trekking. Starting at approximately 06:30 am, we will ascend for 4 hours until we reach the highest point of the Salkantay pass, located 4,650m/15,255ft above sea level. During our trek, we will make a ceremonial offering of gratitude to our Pachamama (Mother Earth) and to Apu Salkantay, using the sacred coca leaves that represent the connection between the material and spiritual worlds in the Andean culture. We will learn more about the history and beliefs of the Incas. Later, we descent to our campsite Soraypampa, have a delicious lunch, and our transportation team will bring you back to Cusco.

The best way to prepare yourself for this trekking experiencee is easy: spend at least 2 to 3 days at a high-altitude place like Cusco, so your body gets used to the high altitude. If you have already been to a high altitude destination before arriving to Cusco, we still recommend you spend at least one full day in Cusco to rest, recuperate from your trip, and enjoy the beautiful views of the city before your trek.
Additionally, taking good care of your body helps deal with the extra pressures that altitude creates. We recommend you to eat healthy food, drink lots of water and stay away from alcohol. Chewing coca leaves, drinking coca tea helps to alleviate any discomfort associated with the altitude.
